Tijdens deze filmavond vertonen we twee korte films van documentairemaker Marta Jurkiewicz: 10 en Daughter. De experimentele estafette-documentaire 10 gaat over dat wat het leven gemeenschappelijk maakt én uniek maakt. In volle concentratie luisteren opeenvolgend een reeks jongens en mannen, in leeftijd variërend tussen 1 en 99 jaar, naar de bespiegelingen over het leven van de steeds tien jaar oudere. Elk verhaal in deze documentaire laat zien wat mogelijk is of werpt een schaduw vooruit. In Daughters reflecteert regisseur Marta Jurkiewicz op persoonlijke wijze op een vraag waar ieder mens die zijn of haar ouders achterlaat in een ander land, op termijn mee te maken krijgt: Hoe ga je voor je ouders zorgen als zij ver weg wonen?
Daughters
Elzbieta (Lodz, Polen) heeft sinds een aantal jaren de zorg voor haar ouder wordende moeder op zich genomen. Na het overlijden van haar moeder komt haar enige kind, Marta, naar Lodz om te
helpen met het leegruimen van de woning. Marta woont en werkt al bijna 10 jaar in Nederland en heeft in Amsterdam een bestaan opgebouwd. Tijdens het leegruimen van de woning wordt duidelijk dat de zorgvraag een generatie is opgeschoven. Wie zal in de toekomst de zorg voor Elzbieta op zich nemen? De fysieke afstand tussen moeder en dochter maakt het moeilijk om de verwachtingen voor de toekomst uit te spreken. De vraag blijft vooralsnog onbeantwoord.
Biografie filmmaker
Marta Jurkiewicz (1982, Polen) is een documentaire filmmaker uit Amsterdam. Ze voltooide haar studie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en de Nederlandse Filmacademie in 2005 en 2011 respectievelijk. Beide afstudeerfilms kregen prijzen – Rene Coelho Award uit Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst (nu LIMA) voor ‘Agatha’ (2005) en de Wildcard Grand voor Documentaire van het Nederlands Filmfonds voor ‘Daughters’ (2011). Naast het maken van films, Jurkiewicz is momenteel programmadeadviseur bij het International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Listening heads rather than talking heads are featured in this experimental documentary about those moments in life we all share as well as those that make each life unique. As the film journeys from one individual to the next, we spend time with boys and men ranging in age from 1 to 99 years old. Each ‘youngster’ listens to his elder’s reflections and advice on the years to come. Taken together, their stories illuminate life’s lessons about the opportunities and pitfalls
awaiting us all.
Daughters
Elzbieta has been taking care of her mother for years. When the latter passes away, the only child of Elzbieta, Marta, flies in to help with the cleaning out of her grandmother’s apartment in
Lodz, Poland. Marta has been living in Amsterdam for the last 10 years and has slowly made it her home. While going through the old objects in the grandmother’s house Elzbieta and Marta start thinking about the future. It becomes apparent that the issue of care taking is shifting to the
following generation. Will Marta be able to take care of her mother when the time comes and does Elzbieta expect that of her? ‘Daughters’ is an intimate documentary reflecting on a question with which everybody who leaves their parents behind in another country is eventually confronted.
Biography of the director
Marta Jurkiewicz (1982, Poland) is a documentary filmmaker based in Amsterdam. She completed her studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Netherlands Film Academy in 2005 and 2011 respectively. Both her graduation films were granted awards – Rene Coelho Award from
Netherlands Institute for Media Art (now LIMA) for ‘Agatha’ (2005) and the Wildcard Grand for Documentary from the Netherlands Film Fund for ‘Daughters’ (2011). Next to making films, Jurkiewicz is currently a program advisor at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
